For this project, I wanted to raise the issue of coexistence of modern architecture and traditional Chinese architecture.
In recent years, China's fast growing economy has led to many foreign investors and architects to flourish, with new skyscrapers and cities under construction to compensate for the over population and rapid urbanism. Through my study trip to China, I was able to witness the chaotic mix of existing vernacular architecture and pervasive foreign architecture. In 2016, President Xi Zing Ping stated that the outburst of these foreign "weird architecture" has to be regulated and has now banned uncanny buildings.
The project is based off the board game Cathedral. The object of the game is to place all of your buildings within the walls of the city, while trying to prevent your opponent from doing so. There are two sets of pieces, contemporary vs. traditional Chinese buildings, to represent the two opposing fractions struggling to gain power and hence, dictate the way the city will develop.
