RESTROOM URBANISM
Public Amenity.
Chicago, Illinois
SD.

This project develops an urban public amenity that provides both functionality and architectural study.
I designed a public rest stop for the 606, which is a 4.3km elevated railroad running east-west on the northwest side of Chicago. As I design this rest stop, the main focuses were creating sectional differentiation in the flat plane of the city and interfacing the public and private spaces. I was intrigued by the shape and color of the Orchard Oriole, which lives in the 606.
The structure of this building correlates the geometries of the bird. As it is clear, the structure is specifically angled to generate the most amount of sunlight into the building. Also, in order to achieve full privacy, one must walk around the structure to get into the bathrooms and the outdoor showers. I brought in nature to break the industrial and the barren characteristics that the walkway has while not affecting the continuous movement of the 606.
